Does your kid hate dental visit? Well, your kids are not alone. As a matter of fact, many kids hate dental visit. However, when kid’s cavity (เด็กฟันผุ, term in Thai) start to appear, you step in as a parent. It is your role to see to it that your child will receive the best dental care. In this article, we will give you tips on how to prepare your child for dental visit, especially if your kid’s tooth filling (อุดฟันเด็ก, term in Thai) procedure is coming.

    • It is a must to choose the right dentist – There are many dentists to choose from, but not all of them are ideal for your kids. When it comes to your child’s oral health, make sure you choose a dentist specializing in pediatric dentistry. A general dentist might be your first option, but a pediatric dentist can offer services tailored for kids. Such dentists specializing in pediatric dentistry undergone additional years of training and they cater to children, adolescents, and even toddlers and babies with special needs. They don’t just study child’s oral health, but also child psychology and development. Hence, they will be able to connect to children more effectively than general dentist.
    • Make sure to schedule appointment on a timely manner – Time is important when it comes to oral health. A little too early can save your child’s teeth from destruction and a little too late can greatly affect your child’s overall health. Hence, it is a must to schedule appointment at the right time. Avoid having a dental appointment before meal or before nap time. Choose a time convenient for your kids, ideally when the kid is in best behavior such as after having a good snack or having a good sleep. It will help prevent the possibility of tantrums.
    • Allow your kids to bring something such as a toy – One way of making your kid comfortable and have a positive outlook about dental appointment is to allow the kid to bring something. It could be a favorite toy or the kid’s favorite human such as an aunt or a grandparent. Having an emotional support will help your kids feel at ease during the procedure. It somehow gives them a sense of relief and security.

Kid’s oral health heavily relies on how their parents take care of it. As a parent, you should stress the importance of having a good oral health habit at a young age. It is indeed a big step bringing the child to a dental appointment, but the atmosphere you set to your child will affect the entire dental visit experience. Preparation is the key. Prepare your kids the best possible way. Do your research well. It might take some sort of time and effort, but your kid’s oral health is at stake and it will all be worth it. If you are a first time parent, you surely are stressed of the idea of finding the best dentist for your child. There will always be a first time and surely everything gets better with time.
