Sinus surgery, also known as sinus operation, is a procedure performed to improve sinus drainage and airflow. It is typically done when sinusitis symptoms are chronic and non-responsive to other medical treatments. Here is an overview of some common reasons sinus surgery may be required and the types of sinus conditions it can treat.

    Reasons for Needing Sinus Surgery

There are several scenarios where a patient may require sinus surgery:

    – Chronic sinus infections – Repeated sinusitis causing facial pain and congestion that keeps returning after antibiotic treatment. Surgery opens blocked passages.

    – Nasal polyps – Noncancerous growths in the sinuses that obstruct breathing and are unable to be treated with medication alone

    – Deviated septum – A crooked or misaligned septum in the nose obstructs breathing. Septoplasty surgery can realign the septum.

    – Sinus tumors – Benign or malignant tumors may require surgical removal to prevent further spreading.

    – Fixing prior issues – Reconstructive surgery to fix issues from previous injury, surgery or birth defects.

    – MRI scans – Surgery may be needed to gain access and sample tissue for MRI imaging of deep sinuses.

    – Chronic allergies – Surgery can reduce congestion and symptoms for people with severe chronic allergies.

Overall, the aim of sinus surgery is to open blocked sinus pathways and restore drainage. This provides long-term relief from congestion, infections and other debilitating symptoms.

    Sinus Surgery After-Care

key things to know about after care following sinus surgery:

    • Rest and take it easy for the first week – Limit strenuous activity and rest as much as possible to allow your body to heal. Avoid blowing your nose forcefully.
    • Use nasal irrigation – Use saline sprays or rinses to keep nasal passages moist and remove any clots or debris. Follow your doctor’s instructions on frequency and proper technique.
    • Manage pain and discomfort – Take any prescribed pain medications as directed. Apply cold compresses to reduce facial swelling and tenderness.
    • Monitor bleeding – Some light bleeding and drainage is normal for a few days. Report any heavy or excessive bleeding to your doctor immediately.

    Types of Sinus Conditions Treated

Some specific sinus conditions that may require surgery include:

    – Chronic Sinusitis – Sinus infections lasting 3 months or longer with congestion, facial pain, headaches.

    – Cystic Fibrosis – Genetic condition causing chronic lung and sinus problems.

    – Samter’s Triad – Disorder causing chronic sinusitis with polyps and asthma symptoms.

    – Nasal Polyps – Abnormal tissue growths that block the sinuses and nasal passages.

    – Deviated Septum – A crooked cartilage wall between the nostrils obstructing breathing.

    – Sinus Tumors – Both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors occurring in the sinus cavities.

    – Fungal Sinusitis – Persistent fungal infection of the sinuses causing congestion and colored mucus.

    – Pediatric Sinusitis – Chronic sinus infections in children unresponsive to other treatments.

Sinus surgery ranges from minimally invasive endoscopic procedures to more complex surgeries like septoplasty. By consulting an ENT specialist in Singapore, they can determine if sinus surgery is the most suitable treatment option for your condition.
